Game Wednesday - Arcade games

Hey game people

How did you like the list of games that were previewed so far? Well this time it will be entirely on the games featured in the arcades. What were some favourite arcade games that you enjoyed back from the 90’s? To name a few, metal slug would be on top five in my list certainly!

Metal slug (1996)

Metal slugs was one of the classic run and gun type of game. The game was quite simple, it involved the player to progress through stages, in which you had to kill all the enemy to reach the end. While progressing, there would be constant enemy charging at you at each level. Every time you killed an enemy they would have dropped an item. Like extra guns to add to you arsenal of weapons, maybe some ammo to refill or health. If you were in trouble, no problem! Second player will come to the rescue!

Sunset Rider (1991)

Reach for the skies! Sunset riders a game where you shoot down all those baddies that hit up on the wanted posters. Being the bounty hunter, you’re given a list of characters to up to four, each of them having different gun sets. For example, there was Steve and billy who uses the revolver. Whereas bob is armed with a rifle and Cormano (popular) uses the shotgun.

Street fighter 2: The World Warrior (1991)

Street fighter 2 became the most played fighting arcade game in the 90’s, this even led to other fighting games adopting similar style to street fighter. What was cool about street fighter 2, is the extra choices of characters added. Originally there was only 2 which was Ryu and Ken as the main characters. But SF2 has included an extra 6 characters from different backgrounds available. Furthermore, after every third match had a bonus stage. You could gain extra points by breaking barrels, cars and drums!

Crazy taxi (1999)

The arcade version that came out in 1999 was an open world driving game. The task required you to pick up passengers and drive to their destinations to earn money and points. The driving was quite fast and dangerous, there will be some minor crashes but it didn't really do any damage. The best parts of the game was doing the stunts. When driving over a ramp you could do stunts with the passenger in the car, this gave you more points.

Well that’s it folks, hope you liked the games that I've previewed for the 90’s decade. You know you’re done when you have ran out of coins in your pockets.

Beauty Trends Tuesdays - Woman 90s Makeup Trends

Today’s post is all about woman’s makeup and cosmetic trends. Makeup looks from the ‘grunge look’ to neutral tones and no-makeup looks.

The early 1990’s makeup trend, ‘grunge look’, primarily consisted of dark red lipstick, slept-in, heavily-applied black eyeliner and black nail polish. Dark eye shadows and mascara were also used to keep the eyes looking dark. Grunge music was a strong influence in this makeup look due to its rising popularity in the early 90s. This style continued into 1994 but was getting out of style the year after.

During mid 90s, neutral tones became desirable and woman had a broader colour palette with a wide variety of neutral, light pink and brown shades. For eye shadows, lighter shades on the lids and darker shades in the crease then the brow bone highlighted. Eyeliners were usually dark and only applied on the top lid. Matte lipsticks were also a trend that emerged where dark shades of red were worn for an evening look.

Blue-frosted eye shadows became fashionable.

By 1997, lip gloss and sparkling, glittery makeup had come into style. It was called ‘Y2K makeup’ and consisted of facial glitter and lip gloss.

Plucking eyebrows until they were basically nonexistent was also huge in the 90s. Looking at brow trends of today makes me shudder at the look of those over-plucked eyebrows.

What 90s trend are you still sporting today?
Thanks for tuning in!

Music Mondays - Britpop Battle: Oasis v Blur

Roll up! Roll up! We have a rumble of epic proportions for today’s Music Monday! Forget beliebers and directioners, today is all about scones, tea, powerful old women and colonialism. In other words: Britain. In more specific terms: Britpop. It was a rebellion from the dominance of of homogenous American music. We’ll be pitting the two major forces of Britpop: Blur and Oasis against each other to determine who reigns supreme.

Round 1: North v South

One major aspect that differentiates Oasis and Blur is the geographical and cultural divide between Northerners and Southerners. Oasis, hailing from Manchester flew the flag for working class Britons and the ebb and flow of their lives whereas Blur represented middle class Londoners. Many commentators hyped up the rivalry as a class war.

Round 2: Biggest Hits

Oasis is probably best known for their 1995 hit “Wonderwall” which singled their transformation into a worldwide Britpop phenomenon. A staple of open mic nights, it is a true hallmark of the height of Britpop. Sadly, this means that it has been played to death and no matter how ground breaking it was at the time, even Oasis’ lead singer loathes the song.

Blur’s greatest hit is arguably their 1994 Britpop classic “Parklife”. Weighed down with accusation of pomposity and a privileged upbringing they touched base with this Phil Daniels narrated song. Daniels starred in “Quadrophenia”, the movie based on the Who’s album of the same name. Try listening to this song without shouting along, PARKLIFE!

Round 3: Where Are They Now?

The Gallagher brothers are almost as famous for their bickering as they are for their music. With an extensive history of fighting, words exchanged and periods of no communication, their relationship has always been a bit rocky. They’ve branched off now to do their own thing and Noel has even started a new band but whispers of an Oasis reunion are kept alive in the British media. In hope of happier Gallagher relations, let's reflect on better times.

On the other hand we’ve got the posh intellectuals of Blur who have forayed into such a diverse variety of careers. Damon continues musical collaboration with Gorillaz, who are currently on hiatus, Graham is pursuing artistic endeavours and Dave had an unsuccessful stint in politics. They’ve recently reunited and released a new album! Good news is, they’ll be heading to our shores for Splendour in the Grass!

P.s. I didn’t mention Alex! I was saving him for last, check out this prophetic gif from the 90s:

And now, believe it or not, he’s achieved his dreams and is making cheese now!

Verdict:

Drumroll please!

Anyway, the verdict is yours. Predictable? Yes. But avoiding a clear cut verdict is the only way to ensure the prevention of WWIII.

As a way of apologising, here’s a dog playing the drums! WOW!

As always, pop on Twitter & take a gander & keep up to date!

Sports Sundays - 1992: Jordan ‘blazes’ the Portland Trail Blazers

Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls continued their dominance in the 1991–92 season, finishing with a 67-15 record. After effortlessly sweeping the Miami Heat in the opening round and surviving a seven game series over the New York Knicks in the second round and then beating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Conference Finals, the Bulls advanced to the NBA Finals again to defend their title.

In the 1991–92 season, the Portland Trail Blazers won back to back as Pacific Division champions after dominating in the playoffs. Having won the Conference Finals in 1990 and with the same core of players returning  to the team, the Blazers thought that 1992 would be their year to win the championship. The Blazers were confident after splitting the first two games in Chicago, but the Bulls performed well on the road for the second straight year, winning two of three in Portland to head back to Chicago up 3-2. In the championship-clinching Game 6, the Bulls rallied from down 15 in the fourth quarter sparked by Jordan, who scored 12 of his 33 points in the last six minutes. The 1992 NBA Finals cemented the legendary reputation of Michael Jordan and his dynasty.

Fashion Friday- 90s Shoes!

Good morning everyone! In today's post, I will be showcasing an array of shoes that have been ridiculously designed and worn by the people of the 90s!

I'll showcase the following shoes in the order of intensity of funkiness haha!

Okay, so first pair of shoes here are from Steve Madden, a popular shoe brand based in the United States.

These pair of sketchers from the 90s, definitely different to what they are now...!
These unisex Adidas sandals...
As I was viewing this, Grace (who is in charge of the music posts), recalled her Dad wearing these pair of sandals with high white socks. And according to Buzzfeed, that was deemed cool back in the day!

Keds, definitely decreasing popularity nowadays, with the replacement and rise in Vans sneakers who offer a similar look.

These jelly 'high heels', sure enough we all recall it making a come back last summer!? Yeah, that was pretty cray.
Wooden clogs, enough said.
John Fluevog's "Munster" shoe, I don't understand how anyone can even walk in these? Let alone have the initial thought to purchase these shoes? What is this logic people?!
And behold... The whackiest of the funkiest of the weirdest...
"Heelys", a cross breed between roller blades and heels! Creative...!

That's all for today!

Games Wednesday - Card games

Did you play with cards when you were younger? Didn't know how to play the game but collecting was still pretty cool. Yeah, the person with the most cards was the popular kid. If you were lucky enough they would trade you their card in exchange. But HEY, there was also the other alternative. Playing cards for keeps with a mini game called flips.

Magic: The Gathering (1993)

This card game was the first made collectible type that revolutionized the new cards of today. Introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast. The concept of this game was based of dungeons and dragons, with creatures from fantasy themes drawings. This game still remains as one of the top playing card games today.

Pokémon Cards (1996)

Pokémon card game was the most popular during the 90’s. I think most of us didn't know how to play this game. But collecting the cards was cool at the time. We all wanted to become like Ash in the series of Pokémon. Collecting cards was like filling a register in the pokedex.

Super Deck (1994)

Made after the comic book series and acclaimed movies is the card game Super Deck. Just like baseball fans collect their favourite member in the team. There is an archive of heroes and villains from the series. One side of the team is based occupying the heroes while the other side is the villains.

That's all for now..Look forward to some more games next week!

Beauty Trends Tuesdays - Men's 90s Hairstyle

Welcome back to some more beauty trends.

In this week’s beauty trends, we are taking a look back at a few most popular men’s hairstyles of the 90s.

Last week, I showed a few of the most popular woman’s 90s hairstyle. Now let’s hear it for the boys.

The Caesar Cut

It was popularized by George Clooney. The hairstyle was named after Julius Caesar where his images depicted him wearing that hairstyle in such manner. It’s a hairstyle with horizontally straight cut, short fringe.

Frosted Tips

Popular in the late 90s amongst every male star and boy band members. Hair was cut short then hairspray and gels were used to create spikes. The tips of the hair were bleached hence ‘frosted tips’.

Curtained Hairstyle

It was believed this form of hairstyle made men look astonishingly gorgeous and gave out a cool aura.

Hi-top Fade

Most youths belonging to Africa-America who were into the hip-hop and urban contemporary music scene had this haircut. This hairstyle is where the sides are cut off or kept short and the hair on top is made longer.

Cornrows

This hairstyle was regarded as traditional African hairstyle; however, with the rise of the hip-hop culture in the 90s, cornrows became famous throughout the world.
