Amazing race 90's Edition video

Hello!
Below is the last post to our 90s themed blog, the video below is our "rip off" take on the show "The Amazing Race" with a 90s twist to it!
Hope you enjoy! :D

Music Mondays - TV Themes

Welcome to the last Music Monday! You're in for a real treat because we've saved the best topic for last! Today's theme is TV themes! Try saying that quickly 10 times! What a tongue twister! Are you excited for 90s TV themes?

1. Rocko's Modern Life

Artist: Sarah Frost-Goetz

Year: 1996

What animal would you say this is? Hint: It's an iconic Australian animal.

Answer: Believe it or not Rocko (the main character of Rocko's Modern Life) is a wallaby!

If you though kids cartoons were a bit adult now you missed out. The 90s was the peak of zany, boundary pushing cartoons aimed at kids. Although Rocko, was an Australian wallaby that emigrated to the US he never even had a hint of an Australian accent, strange isn't it? But that's in line with the tone of the whole show. He's accompanied by his loyal dog Spunky, a neurotic turtle and a large cow. If you're feeling nostalgic for the 90s, this is the show to bring you back to the slapstick humour and absurdity. Keep your eyes peeled for adult references such as the local restaurant - "The Chokey Chicken" and Rocko's job as a "specialty phone operator".

2. Hey Arnold!

Artist: Jim Lang

Year: 1996

"HEY FOOTBALL HEAD!" The catch-cry of the 90s that connected the awesomest kids in the neighbourhood: those that watched Hey Arnold! Centering on the life of fourth grader, Arnold, decked out in his cool outfit of skinny blue jeans, an impossibly small hat to fit on his impossibly (football shaped) head, teamed with a fashion forward sweater over long collared top combo, Arnold was truly paving the way for the future.

If you never watched it during its original run take a trip down memory lane and revisit this classic to learn about family, love, loss, life and most importantly friendship.

3. Pokémon

Artist: Jason Paige

Year: 1997

As soon as you hear that music, doesn't your body automatically and uncontrollably begin to move like this?

Based on the hugely popular video games and dubbed over the original Japanese anime, Pokemon has become and will always be a cartoon staple for years to come. It follows the quest of Ash Ketchum on his journey (which starts at the early age of 11) to become the greatest Pokemon master in the world. Against his annoying rival Gary Oak, helped along by his friends Brock (how old is he meant to be?) and Misty, Ash navigates the Pokemon world, catching monsters and fighting gym leaders.

Even the POTUS, Barack Obama can't get enough of Pokemon!!! Check out his epic singing skills in the video below!

Wasn't that hilarious?
Well Ghastly and Haunter definitely think so!

4. The X-Files

Artist: Mark Snow

Year: 1996

How creepy! Did it spook you?

Well it is truly a frightening show with an equally frightening theme! The bubbling conspiracy and distrust of the government fed into the success of the X-Files. A witty combination of science fiction and horror it brought two popular genres together to tell interesting stories with complicated characters. Forget NCIS, CSI and whatever other crime shows there are and invest in a classic box set that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Now that you've read about and listened to these class 90s TV theme songs, which one is your favourite?

Hey Arnold
The X-Files
Pokémon
Rocko’s Modern Life

VWC Decades: 1990s Fashion & Music Trends

Welcome to the very last segment of Fashion Fridays! Today I will be taking us back to the 90s, where it was all about bold, whacky and funky accessory trends which complemented the fashion apparel trends I have written about before!

The first trend and the most memorable to me, has got to be the butterfly clips, they took place of what bobby pins do today for children. But instead, adding extra "ooomph" with the added wings, (no not, red bull).

And to add to that trend, the creators of the butterfly clips thought they should give it a newer look and feel, this is what I call the butterfly clip 2.0, it’s bigger, better, brighter and realistic-er than ever!

Along with these, you’d always have your hair tied up with your scrunchie. That was the ultimate combo. On a side note, scrunchies were actually the only form of hair tie that would hold your hair together but not leave a dent in your hair after a long period of time. (My fellow ladies audiences would understand)

Next, is something that has most certainly came back and if you remember from my past posts, you may recognize this certain article. You’ve guessed it! (Hopefully) it’s the choker! Except the 90s were much circulated around having it “hippy” or “gothic/grunge” theme to it.

They became such a hit, that they too, were upgraded to choker 2.0 and 3.0. We later also see men rocking the male version of the choker, called a shell necklace. This is where the beach theme comes in.

Here’s one trend I’ve never heard of or have ever encountered, the hair mascara, like mascara for your eyelashes… But for your hair.. What do we think? Was this actually a “thing” of the 90s?

Body glitter, because you had to “shine bright like a diamond” at parties

Beauty Trends Tuesdays - Essential 90s Beauty Products

This week’s post is about the must haves beauty products of the 90s. Let’s take a stroll down beauty junkie memory lane.

Did you know a few are still around and reinvented? Here is a few 90s beauty essentials you HAD to have.

Sun-In

A spray-in hair lightener that practically turned every girl’s hair orange instead of the perfect sun-kissed blonde like the girls in the commercials. A trip to the beach was hardly complete without it.

CK One Perfume

A unisex fragrance where it was known as the cool kid fragrance for an entire high school generation. A revolutionary product where you most likely made your significant other wear it too because that was the definition of 90s romance.

Lip Smacker Lip Balm

Lip balm that had subtle tints of mouth-watering scents that made each tube irresistible. It came in a variety of flavours such as tropical flavours, cotton candy, chocolate, Coca-Cola as well as Dr. Pepper which was the most favourite. I definitely remember having a few of this around my house.

MAC Lipglass

A lip gloss in a tube that gave lips the perfect sticky shine.

Hard Candy Nail Polish

A nail polish brand that had the most vibrant shades you could find. It had a bonus matching ring to the nail polish with every purchase... that was usually too big.

Did you own any of these products?

Well that's it for Beauty Trends Tuesdays. Hope you enjoyed reading all the post!

Music Monday - Hip Hop and R&B

When I say hip hop does your mind conjure up an image similar to this?

Or even this?

Well let's turn back the dial and see how we got where we are with modern hip hop and R&B. Let's time travel all the way back to the 90s: the Golden Age of Hip Hop. This was a time of innovation and social consciousness in rap music that continued the rise of the mid 80s into the culmination of mainstream break through that shook up the vanilla music scene at the time.

1. 2Pac

Key Song: Changes

Year: 1998

2Pac is a true icon of 90s hip hop and probably one of the most recognised public figures of the period. The song dealt with serious issues beyond the gangster stereotype that has obscured his legacy of telling his truth about his life through profound lyrics set to thumping beats.

2Pac was a genuinely inspiration person with words of wisdom that outlived him. Here is one such inspiring quote:

Now, when I say Beyonce, do you picture her like this?

Or do you still see her clearly in your mind as the girl second from the left decked out in the gaudiest 90s garb?

2. Destiny's Child

Key Song: Say My Name

Year: 1999

Yep, before Beyonce was the globe-trotting worldwide pop superstar we're currently familiar with, she was one of three (originally four) powerful women that made up R&B queens Destiny's Child. Waving the flag for the 90s Girl Power Revolution, along with their compatriots across the pond, the Spice Girls, they were the aspirational figures of 90s girls.

3. Wu-Tang Clan

Key Song: Protect Ya Neck

Year: 1993

The Wu-Tang Clan were at the forefront of contemporary hip hop with their baggy jeans (extra brownie points if one leg was rolled up), do-rags, backwards caps, white tees, hi top sneakers and Timberlands. The tight skinny jeans, skinny suits, skinny ties, slim line this, skin tight that was a foreign concept at the time.

With their quick and witty rhymes they were a tour de force, the likes of which are feebly imitated today. Contemporary hardcore hip hop wouldn't have even scared off their mothers back in the day.

That's the end of this week's installment of Music Mondays but tune in next week for our final edition on TV Themes!

After reading all that I hope you've learnt a lesson, mainly that:

Fashion Fridays! 90s Guys Fashion Trends

I know all we've discussed about are women's fashion in the 90s, so here I present to you, men's fashion of the 90s! We might see reoccurring trends from previous blog posts, let's find out!

1. Overalls with one strap down, this is inspired by the upbringing of "The Fresh Prince" as it made many appearances in the television series.
Pictured is below is Will Smith

2. Middle Part bowl cuts

3. Oakley's Sunglasses, I do remember many celebrities rocking that look with the backward snapback

4. The backward snapback, yep was right!

5. Short sleeved flannel tees, so here's the similarity with women and men's fashion! They both rocked the flannel in the 90s!

6. Bowling-inspired tops! Props to Chandler from "Friends" who rocked and probably made the bowling shirt a "thing" in the 90s! So far we've seen Rachel and Chandler being influential fashion icons in the 90s! Oh and what the heck! He's also rocking the backward snapback!

7. Who needs smart phones, when you can have pagers? Haha, would not mind exchanging my smart phone for a page for a day! Would be insightful I reckon!

8. Acrylic striped ski jumpers

9. Rayon shirts, if you were cool, you'd have two or three ready for that 'special date' or that 'special occasion'! They are apparently silky printed shirts made from synthetic fibres... Men are definitely more fashionable in this aspect hahaha.

10. Carpenter jeans, specifically made to have an extra loop in the waist for carpenters to place their hammers into it. This trend is similar to the one that's hitting the younger demographics, Timberland boots. Timberland boots are pretty much "Tradee boots" and have been made popular for no apparent reason.

11. And... Yep! Joey (Friends) made it too! White crew necks under everything... Still is popular today!

12. Velcro wallets

Game Wednesday - Arcade games

Hey game people

How did you like the list of games that were previewed so far? Well this time it will be entirely on the games featured in the arcades. What were some favourite arcade games that you enjoyed back from the 90’s? To name a few, metal slug would be on top five in my list certainly!

Metal slug (1996)

Metal slugs was one of the classic run and gun type of game. The game was quite simple, it involved the player to progress through stages, in which you had to kill all the enemy to reach the end. While progressing, there would be constant enemy charging at you at each level. Every time you killed an enemy they would have dropped an item. Like extra guns to add to you arsenal of weapons, maybe some ammo to refill or health. If you were in trouble, no problem! Second player will come to the rescue!

Sunset Rider (1991)

Reach for the skies! Sunset riders a game where you shoot down all those baddies that hit up on the wanted posters. Being the bounty hunter, you’re given a list of characters to up to four, each of them having different gun sets. For example, there was Steve and billy who uses the revolver. Whereas bob is armed with a rifle and Cormano (popular) uses the shotgun.

Street fighter 2: The World Warrior (1991)

Street fighter 2 became the most played fighting arcade game in the 90’s, this even led to other fighting games adopting similar style to street fighter. What was cool about street fighter 2, is the extra choices of characters added. Originally there was only 2 which was Ryu and Ken as the main characters. But SF2 has included an extra 6 characters from different backgrounds available. Furthermore, after every third match had a bonus stage. You could gain extra points by breaking barrels, cars and drums!

Crazy taxi (1999)

The arcade version that came out in 1999 was an open world driving game. The task required you to pick up passengers and drive to their destinations to earn money and points. The driving was quite fast and dangerous, there will be some minor crashes but it didn't really do any damage. The best parts of the game was doing the stunts. When driving over a ramp you could do stunts with the passenger in the car, this gave you more points.

Well that’s it folks, hope you liked the games that I've previewed for the 90’s decade. You know you’re done when you have ran out of coins in your pockets.
