Fashion Fridays - 90s trends that made a comeback!

Welcome back to Fashion Fridays!

In todays segment, I present to you fashion trends that have made a comeback! Now, remember when I said I have noticed more and more 90s vibes in todays fashion? It's really true! Haha!

Okay, so let's start rolling the comparisons, note that the images to the left are from the 90s and images on the right are from this current era.

So, let's play a game of "spot the similarities", pretty self explanatory.. Just spot similar trends in the side by side comparison photos!

Pictured above: Liv Tyler (left) and Jessica Alba (right)
They're both rocking the deep burgundy lip colour, which is definitely popular in 1995 in the "Grunge" era.

Pictured above: Drew Barrymore (left) and Rihanna (right)
Okay, this ones a little tricky, but the choker is the answer! We see here, Barrymore rocking a ribbon choker and Rihanna sporting a series of stacked gold chokers. There is definitely a more modern twist on the 90s fashion, and is agreeably more tasteful!

Pictured above: Liv Tyler (left) and Jessica Alba (right)
Liv Tyler posed in a pair of doc marten boots for the Empire Records in 1995 and we see the reoccurring trend in Alba's outfit in 2013. In fact! Alba's outfit is a spitting image of the 90s! The floral maxi, leather jacket and doc martens!

Pictured above: Winona Ryder (left) and Cara Delevingne (right)
Ryder, mastering the "Grunge" look with a biker jacket in 1990 and Delevingne rocking the leather jacket in 2014.

Pictured above: Alicia Silverstone (left) and Miranda Kerr (right)
Silverstone, spotted in a floral skater dress in 1993 and Kerr in a modernised floral skater skirt accompanied by cut-outs, giving it a more fresh and futuristic vibe.

Pictured above: Britney Spears (left) and Jamie Chung (right)
Spears in a dark denim jacket and Chung working it at Coachella in 2015.

And finally... What screams more 90s than the SPICE GIRLS?
Pictured above: Spice girls (left) and Charli XCX (right)
Both lengthening their legs as well as their heights with those platform shoes!

Okay, that's the wrap!
Comment down below which of the mentioned trends is currently living in your closet!

For me... It's the denim jacket and the doc martens!

Alright! Until next time! :)

Game Wednesdays - Battleships!

Hey there

Last Wednesday I did a review on a video game from the 90’s based on Super Mario game. This time we will venture into the games that is from the physical world.

While searching for ideas for a game, I remember watching a movie on television called Battleships. Yes the one with Liam Neeson in it!  So I thought why not have a review about the board game that was a hit (pun intended).

This game was really popular back during the early 90’s and still popular now you can say. It’s a type of game you would play on a rainy day or whenever you like. I remember playing this game a lot when I was a kid growing up.

Battleships is a two player game which consisted of a board and some ships to accompany you with to battle. The objective was to destroy all of the enemy ships on the sea board to win the game!. If you were lucky enough to hit the smaller size ships it would make the game so much easier.

Here was one of the electronic talking model for battleships made by Milton Bradley and released in 1989.

The voice functions of this board game was quite memorable. I kind of enjoyed the sound effects when a missile had hit one of my enemy’s ships.

Did you remember a phrase that became popular from this game…?

Pretty funny right!?
There is too many reference to this quote, just proves how popular this game was.

Here is one of the electronic battleships commercials featured in 1993.

Music Mondays - Pop Punk

Is punk too hardcore for your tastes? Pop too wimpy? Well I’ve got the perfect music genre for you! Presenting... POP PUNK! This musical phenomenon was all the rage in the 90s and is the topic for today’s Music Monday! So, without further ado, let’s put on our best all-black outfits and reflect on the musical genius of the pioneers of pop punk!

1. Blink-182

Key Song: Adam’s Song

Year: 1999

Blink 182 are THE NUMBER ONE pop punk band!!!!!!!!

They paved the way for countless pop punk acts and brought this genre to the fore when pop punk reigned supreme. Blink 182 Adam’s song is a marked departure from the shenanigans that 90s audiences had become accustomed to. Dealing with themes of suicide and depression, it has been the subject of controversy.

2. Green Day

Key Song: Basket Case

Year: 1994

Repping the West Coast, Green Day is a true stalwart of pop punk, setting the hearts of pseudo-rebellious suburban teenagers racing. Basket Case is one of the singles from their revolutionary album Dookie. This would turn out to be the band’s most successful album and established the sound of the pop punk movement.

3. Wheatus

Key Song: Teenage Dirtbag

Year: 1994

Wow, the video is defined by that bucket hat. Sky blue, red sash, wrinkled. Ever heard of Wheatus? Probably not. If you have, I can confidently say it’s only because you sing this song at karaoke too much. Stop. If this video wasn’t terrible enough, it also includes 90s icons Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari (who should have stayed in the 90s). Press play and brace yourself, annoyingness awaits.

What? You listened to the whole song? Okay. I didn’t expect that, but okay. You enjoyed it? Okay, great. No, I’m not passing judgement.

Sport Sundays

Micheal Jordan leaves his first Airness mark on the NBA Finals with an Acrobatic                                                                                          move

Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were striving for their first NBA Championship in the 1991 NBA finals. The Chicago bulls went to win their first championship, however, Jordan's acrobatic move in a play was the most talked about move in the 90s. It was a play that reflected all the qualities that make Jordan so unique. Jordan, while in mid-air switched the ball from his right hand to his left, twisted his body to avoid contact and somehow scooped it in past Green.
Jordan's play seemed to sap the life from the Lakers, who had won the series opener at Chicago Stadium. The Bulls captured Game 2 107-86 and went on to win the next three in Los Angeles to wrap up their first NBA crown.

Sports Sundays - 1991: Jordan leaves his first ‘Airness’ mark in NBA Finals

Micheal Jordan had far too many highlights in his legendary career, too many brilliant plays to count. A few historical plays include the NCAA title-winning basket as a freshman against Georgetown, his game-winning shot over Craig Ehlo in the playoffs against Cleveland and so many other buzzer-beaters. However, the Jordan dynasty, when Jordan and the Chicago Bulls won their first championship.

The Bulls really were not supposed to win in 1991, as many thought the Bulls did not have a realistic chance against with an experienced opponent like Magic’s Lakers. This was largely based on the NBA’s rule of thumb, which was that a team needed to experience the Finals at least one time before being capable of winning the championship title. After, surprisingly, sweeping the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals, Jordan and his team featuring Scottie Pippen, Horance Grant, John Paxson and Bill Cartwright, carried that momentum to the NBA Finals. Despite losing a close Game 1 at home, Micheal Jordan and the Chicago Bulls went on to win three straight on the Lakers’ home court and the Jordan Dynasty finally began.

Music Mondays: Eurotrash

Welcome to the second installment of Music Mondays and you're in for a treat today because it's all about Eurotrash! You may be thinking, 'trash? That's a bit harsh' but Eurotrash is just a colloquial term for fun, flashy and glitzy European pop music! P.s. We all know we love it, there's no shame in that! So pop into the international aisle of your local supermarket, grab some sauerkraut and jalapeños and enjoy the wonderful eccentricity of the European artists that defined the 90s music scene!

1. Björk

Key Song: It's Oh So Quiet

Year: 1998

Country: Iceland

Björk Guðmundsdóttir, most commonly referred to by themononymously as Björk,  is an Icelandic singer-songwriter eclectic with an eclectic musical style that incorporates aspects of dance, jazz, electronic, classical and avant-garde music.

On the origins of the song and her less fond opinions on it, Björk commented:

"It was sort of a joke really. It was a song Guy Sigsworth used to play on the bus when we were touring. Ever since, I almost regret doing it because I wanted to put so much importance on making new music. So many people are doing old music and you've even got new bands doing old music. If I put something out in this world, it would be the courage to go ahead and invent things, so it's ironic 'It's Oh So Quiet' became my biggest song. The best bit was the video."

Despite her lukewarm feelings about the song, she acknowledges the creativity and joviality captured by the video. The video was directed by Spike Jonze and was inspired by musicals of the 1940s-60s, notably the 1964 film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg.

Interesting fact: Björk was ill with a fever and could only speak in a whisper during the shoot.

2. Eiffel 65

Key Song: I'm Blue

Year:
1999

Country: Italy

YO LISTEN UP, HERE'S A STORY!!!! Seriously, this song needs no introduction. Just hit play and appreciate the kindness bestowed upon you by one of the most innovative forces in 90s music - Eiffel 65.

Feeling confused by this masterpiece of a video? If you need clarity turn to this great example of the blue man syndrome: Tobias Fünke - the Never Nude, innuendo prone aspiring actor from Arrested Development.

3. Los del Río

Key Song: Macarena

Year:
1994

Country: Spain

Take a look at that album cover. You're probably thinking to yourself, 'wow these dudes are old'. And yes, you would be correct in thinking that. But what you don't know is that these two gentlemen are responsible for all those unforgettably fun nights you did Macarena. So, without further ado, here for your entertainment, is the Macarena! (Don't resist, follow your bodily urges & get up & join in!)

And don't worry if you forget the steps! Dr Evil & a magical unicorn are here to help out!

Thanks for reading! And check in again next Monday and bring your black eyeliner and your hair straightener because it's time for pop punk!

Game Wednesday - Super Mario

Hello there!

If you've recognized the name of this character then you've probably played a game relating to Mario. I mean who doesn't know about this guy, he is seen everywhere in the media and has featured in most games.

Well, Mario is the icon for the game industry since the time around the 90’s until now. The 90’s was a good time for most games that had been released and had consisted of some great Mario game franchises. Let’s see there was Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros series 1, 2, 3 and some others. The list goes on…

For this blog post I’ll just stick with Super Mario on the Nintendo 64. Why? Because I had so many memories during my younger years with this game (oh the nostalgia).

Do you remember walking through paintings to reach to your next stage? I certainly did. For most of you who had played this game, would know that collecting stars was important. The more stars that you had meant you were able to venture into different worlds. That means more challenges, different courses, solving puzzles and collecting coins.

Mario is known for his abilities in his games like the fireball he shoots out from his palms of his hands. In the Super Mario 64 platform game however, there are certain items that enhances his skills. Skills like being able to fly using a special hat called the “Wing Cap”. I know it may sound weird but there was a stage where Mario is required to fly and roam around in a world.

Also do you remember this guy?
Yeah he’s the bad guy named “Bowser” kind of looks like a dragon but his actually a turtle!

Like the hero Mario is, he will again go and save the princess that has been captured by this villain.

WELCOME TO MUSIC MONDAYS!

(Please excuse the date of today’s entry, it is of course not Monday today but from here on in I swear on the sanctity of Blur that Music Mondays will occur on Mondays!)

Anyway, since this is the first Music Monday Post I will introduce the format. Every Monday (I promise) there will a post on a trend in 90s music. Today’s trend is: THE RISE OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC!!!!

Now, with the popularity of EDM (Electronic Dance Music) we shall take a look back in history at the musicians that paved the way for today’s stars:

1. Fatboy Slim

Key Song: Praise You

Year: 1998

What can I say about Fatboy Slim? Truly a pioneer, just take a look at his name! He has a genius that is most profoundly exhibited in his 1999 hit ‘Praise You’ that combined aspects of rock, soul, hip hop and big band to create a monster hit along with an iconic video! Check it out!

2. Haddaway

Key Song: What is Love

Year: 1993

What is Love? We’d all like to know the answer to that question, or at least Haddaway would. This song remains popular to this day as it’s blasted out of the speakers of clubs. Heavy with Trinidadian and German influences, this was THE anthem of the 90s.

It is also notable as being the subject of an unforgettable SNL skit from the 90s. Press play and prepare to laugh!

3. Darude

Key Song: Sandstorm

Year: 1999

Waving the flag for trance, we have the hit of Finnish DJ Darude. Thanks to a meme that has popped up recently this classic has been seared into the records of electronica history. As described in the arbiter of all things urban, urban dictionary’s top result describes it as “The name of every song in existence” as submitted by the aptly named user “Some Random White Guy With a Name”. A confusing and perhaps meaningless video accompanies an equally trivial but unexplainably addictive tune.
